Compare
Wallpaper Engine
and Seasill.
There is no Wallpaper Engine for Mac. It runs on Windows, with a free Android companion, and its makers say a Mac version is “not economically viable” for now. Seasill is a different app, for Mac and Windows. It doesn’t open Wallpaper Engine’s wallpapers, and doesn’t pretend to.
We make Seasill. This page compares it with an app we respect, and we have tried to be fair: every fact about Wallpaper Engine comes from its own store page or help pages, linked where it is used and checked on 28 September 2026. If something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.
Is there a Wallpaper Engine for Mac?
No. Wallpaper Engine is for Windows 10 and 11, with a companion app that takes wallpapers to Android phones. Its help pages say there are no immediate plans to support other platforms: porting it would be an enormous amount of work, and for Mac or Linux it is “not economically viable” at this time.
So anything offered as “Wallpaper Engine for Mac” is not from its makers. Running Windows in a virtual machine only puts Wallpaper Engine on that virtual machine’s desktop, not on your Mac’s.
What a Mac can have is a different app that does a similar job. Seasill is one of several; our guide to live wallpaper on a Mac names others too, free ones included.

Which to choose.
Wallpaper Engine is the better choice if
you only use Windows, you want the biggest library made by a community, or you want interactive and 3D scene wallpapers and an editor to build your own. For $4.99, once, it is very good.
Seasill is the better choice if
you use a Mac, or a Mac and a PC (Seasill Pro covers three computers in any mix), or you want a catalogue that is chosen for you and searchable by what you mean (“rain on a window at night”) rather than a workshop to browse.
Both play your own videos, and both handle several displays. On Seasill, Free and Seasill are for one computer and Seasill Pro for three, in any mix of Mac and Windows.
Coming from Wallpaper Engine.
Seasill can’t open Wallpaper Engine’s wallpapers, scenes or projects, and we don’t suggest pulling videos out of them: Workshop wallpapers are shared for use in Wallpaper Engine, under the Workshop’s terms and their creators’ wishes.
Your own videos, anything you made or have the right to use, work in Seasill as they are: Add › From your files…. And the catalogue likely has the subjects you liked, found by describing them: rain on glass, a city at night, a slow ocean.
About the price.
Wallpaper Engine is $4.99 once, and Seasill’s paid plans are yearly. The difference is honest: Seasill’s catalogue is ours to keep, host and grow, and new wallpapers join it every week. The yearly price pays for that.
Free costs nothing and has no time limit. It plays your own videos without a limit or a mark; its limits apply to catalogue wallpapers only (one live display, up to 1080p with a small mark, five at a time). The plans in full.
Questions.

No. Wallpaper Engine is for Windows, with a companion app for Android. Its help pages say there are no immediate plans for other platforms, and that a Mac version is not economically viable for now.
Can Seasill run my Wallpaper Engine wallpapers?
No. Seasill does not open Wallpaper Engine’s wallpapers, scenes or projects. It plays video: its own catalogue and your own files.
Is Seasill a port of Wallpaper Engine?
No. It is a separate app by a separate team, with nothing to do with Wallpaper Engine. On the Mac it grew from Phosphene, an open-source app by kageroumado.
Why is Seasill yearly when Wallpaper Engine is $4.99 once?
Seasill’s catalogue is ours to keep, host and grow, and the yearly price pays for that. The Free plan costs nothing for as long as you like, and your own videos are never limited on it.
Does Seasill work on Windows too?
Yes. Seasill runs on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11 as well as macOS 26 or later, and Seasill Pro covers three computers in any mix of the two.
